Are you decorating your car for halloween?

By that I mean are you participating in a "trunk or treat" event in your neighborhood or at your local Church or place of worship?

I don't know about you, but around here people just don't trust strangers. It is dangerous these days to do like I did when I was a kid and canvas the town going door to door ringing bells of people you've never met and receiving 2-3 pillowcases of candy in 3-4 hours time!

Now that I'm an adult and take my kids out, we go to our local church and do a "trunk or treat".

For those not familiar with this let me explain it to you. You advertise the event and try to get as many volunteer cars as possible. Each family decorates their car with a non-scary theme and brings some candy to share out of their trunk. Those who can't decorate their car donate candy. There are also fall-themed games like ring tosses, bean bags, and the like. The cars Line up in rows in the parking lot and the kids go 'car to car' to collect candy! It is an extrmely safe and positive, nonthreatening environment!

Our church started doing this last year and it was such a success that we're doing it again this year!

Has sickness slowed down your halloween decorating?

I know it has for me. I have chronic hayfever and take weekly allergy injections for it. Right about this time until the killing frost I get 1-2 sinus infections that sometimes keeps me home in bed. That is why I haven't been posting on a regular basis.

Greet your guests in an eerie entryway on All Hallows Eve with these ghostly decorating tricks:

Hang black rubber bats from your chandelier, lampshade or ceiling fan. Also string them around your doorknobs and outdoor lights.
Use a carved pumpkin as a planter to hold fall branches and leaves -- and don't forget those cobwebs.

Halloween Sunflowers in a Black Basket

Create This Simple Decoration in No Time at All

Sometimes the simplest decorations are the most effective. Using artificial flowers and a black basket, we've created this easy Halloween decoration. We found the fixings at a local craft store and put it together in a hurry. It makes a perfect table decoration for your family dinners or holiday party.

Follow the instructions here to make a festive Halloween Sunflowers in a Black Basket decoration for your fall table or door.

You'll need the following materials and tools:

A basket painted black (which you can buy or make yourself.) If you can't find one already painted, find one that is the right shape and spray-paint it black. Ours is shaped like a cauldron, perfect for Halloween.
A large "plant" of orange sunflowers
Wire cutters (to cut the plant apart).
Berries or sprays of glass beads in fall or Halloween colors.
Glue gun if you want to make the decoration permanent

Follow these simple steps to make the Black Halloween Basket with Sunflowers:

Cover your work table with plastic or an old sheet.
Lay out the materials and tools.
Cut the sunflower stems from the plant, leaving about 8" to 10" of stem.
Spread out the flowers at the stems and place the flowers into the basket, arranging them around the basket.

If you want to make the basket construction permanent, secure the stems with hot glue.
Insert the sprays of beaded berries around the flowers, spacing them evenly.

That's all there is to it!

You might try some variations using this centerpiece.

Place a square of seasonal fabric on the middle of your table. Either leave it flat on the table or crumple it up in an artistic way. Place the basket of sunflowers in the center and place a pumpkin or black cat nearby.
If you prefer, line the basket with a glass container or heavy plastic and use fresh flowers for the decoration.
If you can't find orange sunflowers, try orange mums or other seasonal-colored blossoms.

There are many ways to decorate a pumpkin.

You could just plane carve it with a knife.
You could add things to it like beads, construction paper, etc.
A combination of both.

I've seen people do things like:

Spray spider webs
The obligatory plastic pumpkin
Animated and non-animated black spiders hanging from the fluorescent lights
Stuffed black cats
Broom sticks
Witches

How did you decorate your house for Halloween when you grew up?

When I grew up, my mother was very much into decorating for Halloween. She did things like:

Window clings on each window (Witches, Ghosts, goblins, and the like)
A huge real pumpkin with a candle on it which sat on the front porch.
Replaced the traditional white porch light bulb with a "black" bulb
Ran a tape recorder with scary noises coming out of it.
